Commitment to Carbon Neutral University

As a public higher education institution of the Republic of Türkiye, Akdeniz University recognizes the critical importance of addressing climate change and supporting national and global efforts toward a low-carbon future. Türkiye’s ratification of the Paris Agreement and the declaration of the national 2053 Net-Zero Emission Target represent an important milestone in the country’s climate policy. In line with these commitments and Türkiye’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution submitted under the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Akdeniz University affirms its responsibility to contribute actively to the transition toward a climate-neutral and sustainable society.

Akdeniz University is committed to integrating climate change mitigation and sustainability principles into its institutional strategies, campus management practices, academic activities, and community engagement efforts. Akdeniz University will work to progressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with campus operations through improvements in energy efficiency, the increased use of renewable energy sources, and the adoption of environmentally responsible infrastructure and transportation solutions. At the same time, Akdeniz University will continue to promote sustainable resource management practices, including efficient water use, waste reduction, and circular economy approaches across campus facilities.

Akdeniz University also recognizes its responsibility to generate knowledge and develop innovative solutions that support Türkiye’s long-term climate objectives. Interdisciplinary research initiatives addressing energy transition, climate-resilient infrastructure, sustainable water and agricultural systems, and environmental technologies will continue to be encouraged and strengthened. Through education and training activities, Akdeniz University aims to equip students and professionals with the knowledge and skills required for the green and digital transformation of society.

In addition, Akdeniz University will support transparency and accountability by developing mechanisms to monitor and assess its greenhouse gas emissions and sustainability performance over time.
